The 2013 Annual Green Roof Industry Survey was released this week by the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) Association. They are dedicated to the development of the green roof industry throughout the U.S. and Canada. Each year they gather information from members and other interested parties to determine trends in Green roofing. The findings are very encouraging for anyone who is interested in promoting eco-friendly practices!
This year they have found continued double digit growth in the industry from the previous year. The industry grew by 10% from their findings in 2012! A significant change has been the growth of green roof installation in the public sector. It is outpacing the private sector for the first time in a decade. Schools and municipal buildings are finally embracing sustainability. Likely, they have realized that prioritizing the environment is good for political support! Additionally, the benefits of a green environment for work and learning are becoming more well-known. The report reminds us that these benefits include:
Aesthetic improvement
Waste diversion
Stormwater management
Moderation of urban heat island effect
Improved air quality
New amenity spaces
Local job creation
The New York City Region is third in growth, after Washington D.C. and Chicago. Washington D.C. is leading the way in both public and private eco-building projects!
